Manuka Flower Tea: Flavor, Manuka Leaf, Ingredients, Caffeine-Free & How to Brew

OBARASOTARO

Manuka is one of New Zealand’s best-known plants, especially because of manuka honey. But have you ever tried enjoying manuka in a completely different way—as an herbal tea?

Tea Total’s Manuka Flower Tea is a caffeine-free herbal blend built around New Zealand manuka leaf and combined with a variety of leaves, flowers, seeds and roots.

Alongside manuka leaf, the blend contains raspberry leaf, blackberry leaf, rosehip, lemon balm, peppermint and other botanicals—14 ingredients in total.

Despite the number of ingredients, the flavor is surprisingly light and approachable.

Refreshing herbal aromas, gentle natural sweetness and a subtle touch of spice come together in a smooth, easy-drinking cup that is quite different from both traditional black tea and heavier spice blends.

Because the herbal character is relatively mild, it is also a good choice for people who do not usually drink herbal tea or who would like to try a loose-leaf herbal blend for the first time.

It is also caffeine-free, making it easy to enjoy in the morning, during an afternoon tea break or after dinner when you prefer to avoid caffeine.

In this article, we explore the flavor and aroma of Manuka Flower Tea, its 14 botanical ingredients, the manuka leaf at the heart of the blend, how to brew it, and ways to enjoy it hot, iced or with manuka honey.

What Is Manuka Flower Tea?

Manuka Flower Tea is a caffeine-free herbal blend created by New Zealand tea brand Tea Total.

What makes this tea especially distinctive is the use of manuka leaf, from a plant closely associated with New Zealand.

It is blended with berry leaves, rosehip, fennel seed, lemon balm, peppermint, flowers, roots and other botanicals, each contributing its own character.

Although the product is called “Manuka Flower Tea,” the manuka ingredient itself is manuka leaf rather than manuka flowers.

The overall blend does, however, include flowers such as everlasting flower, blue mallow flower and marigold, creating a colorful combination of leaves, flowers, seeds and roots.

Key features of Manuka Flower Tea

• Made with New Zealand manuka leaf
• A blend of 14 botanical ingredients
• Light and refreshing taste
• Fresh herbal aroma with gentle natural sweetness
• A subtle touch of spice
• Caffeine-free
• Enjoyable both hot and iced
• Approximately 30 cups per 60g, depending on the amount used

When people hear the word “manuka,” manuka honey is often the first thing that comes to mind.

While manuka honey lets you enjoy nectar gathered from manuka flowers, this tea offers a completely different experience by using the leaves of the manuka plant as part of the herbal blend.

It is a lovely choice when you want to try something that feels distinctly New Zealand and a little different from your usual tea.

If you know manuka honey but have never tried manuka leaf tea, this Tea Total blend is well worth discovering.

What Does It Taste Like? A Light and Refreshing Herbal Blend

With 14 different botanical ingredients, you might expect the tea to have a very strong or complicated herbal flavor.

In fact, it is surprisingly light.

As the tea brews, a fresh herbal aroma gently rises from the cup.

On the palate, the mild herbal base is layered with a hint of fruitiness, a light spicy note from fennel seed and gentle natural sweetness from licorice root.

Freshness, subtle sweetness and a touch of spice come together without any single ingredient dominating the cup.

We have enjoyed this tea ourselves over time at Brilliant Life Products NZ, and what continues to stand out is how smooth and easy to drink it is despite the number of herbs in the blend.

It is neither a sweet fruit tea nor a rich cinnamon-forward spice tea. Instead, it has a light, natural herbal character of its own.

It can be enjoyed by experienced herbal tea drinkers as well as those who are just beginning to explore herbal blends.

A light cup that also pairs well with food

Because the sweetness and aroma are not overpowering, Manuka Flower Tea works well not only as a tea-time drink but also alongside meals.

It is a refreshing option after food, or whenever you feel like something a little different from water or your usual tea.

As a loose-leaf blend, you can also adjust the amount used and the steeping time to suit your preferred strength.

Keep it light one day and brew it a little stronger the next. That flexibility is part of the pleasure of loose-leaf tea.

What Is in the Blend? 14 Botanical Ingredients

Manuka Flower Tea combines manuka leaf with 13 other botanical ingredients, including leaves, flowers, seeds and roots.

Ingredients

• Manuka leaf
• Raspberry leaf
• Blackberry leaf
• Rosehip
• Fennel seed
• Nettle leaf
• Strawberry leaf
• Lemon balm
• Peppermint
• Everlasting flower
• Blue mallow flower
• Dandelion root
• Licorice root
• Marigold

The beauty of the blend is that so many ingredients come together in a balanced and approachable cup.

Each botanical contributes a little freshness, gentle sweetness, fruitiness, spice or herbal aroma, creating a layered flavor rather than a single dominant note.

Berry leaves and rosehip

The blend contains raspberry leaf, blackberry leaf and strawberry leaf.

Unlike a fruit tea made primarily with pieces of fruit, these leaves create a softer herbal foundation.

Rosehip adds a subtle fruity character that gives the overall blend another layer of aroma and flavor.

Lemon balm and peppermint

Lemon balm and peppermint add a fresh dimension to the blend.

The mint does not dominate. Instead, it works together with the other leaves and flowers to create a light, refreshing finish.

Fennel seed

Fennel is an aromatic plant commonly used in cooking, spice blends and herbal teas.

In Manuka Flower Tea, fennel seed contributes a distinctive aroma with a gently sweet impression and a subtle spicy note.

Everlasting flower, blue mallow and marigold

The inclusion of several flowers is one of the details that suits the name “Manuka Flower Tea.”

Set among the green leaves, the flowers make the loose-leaf blend visually appealing even before it is brewed.

Watching the various botanicals infuse in the teapot is part of the experience.

Dandelion root and licorice root

The blend also includes roots, with both dandelion and licorice used in the mix.

Licorice root in particular contributes a subtle natural sweetness to Manuka Flower Tea.

Important information when enjoying herbal tea containing licorice root

Avoid consuming large amounts of licorice for extended periods and enjoy this tea in moderation.

If you are being treated for high blood pressure, heart or kidney conditions, or if you are currently taking medication, please consult your doctor or pharmacist before drinking this tea.

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, please also consult an appropriate healthcare professional before use.

What Is Manuka Leaf? A Distinctively New Zealand Ingredient

Among the 14 botanicals, the ingredient that gives Manuka Flower Tea its particularly distinctive identity is manuka leaf.

Manuka is closely associated with New Zealand and is widely known internationally because of the honey produced from its flower nectar.

But honey is not the only way to experience the manuka plant.

This tea uses New Zealand manuka leaf as part of the blend, pairing it with raspberry leaf, rosehip, lemon balm, peppermint and other botanicals.

Rather than allowing manuka leaf to dominate the cup, Tea Total layers it carefully with the other ingredients to create a fresh and approachable flavor.

With manuka honey, you enjoy the flower nectar. With Manuka Flower Tea, you enjoy the leaf.

It is a completely different way to experience the same plant—and one that feels especially fitting for a tea created in New Zealand.

For anyone interested in uniquely New Zealand ingredients or in exploring manuka beyond honey, this blend offers something genuinely different.

Enjoy the slightly unusual experience of drinking manuka leaf in a cup where 14 botanicals come together.

Caffeine-Free and Easy to Enjoy Throughout the Day

Manuka Flower Tea is caffeine-free.

Coffee, traditional black tea and green tea naturally contain caffeine, and some people prefer to reduce their caffeine intake later in the day.

A caffeine-free herbal tea gives you another option when you want something warm and aromatic without choosing coffee or traditional tea.

With Manuka Flower Tea, you can enjoy the aroma of New Zealand manuka leaf and 13 other botanicals from morning through to evening, depending on your mood.

For example, enjoy it:

  • As a morning cup
  • During an afternoon tea break
  • After dinner when you feel like a warm drink
  • Whenever you want something different from coffee or traditional tea
  • Hot or iced, depending on the season and your mood

A distinctly New Zealand manuka leaf tea that is easy to enjoy from morning through to evening. Its caffeine-free nature makes it simple to fit into different parts of the day.

How to Brew Manuka Flower Tea

The amount of tea, volume of water and steeping time can all change the aroma and flavor of an herbal blend.

For fruit and herbal teas, the manufacturer recommends using one heaped teaspoon with approximately 250ml of water and steeping for around 6–10 minutes.

At Brilliant Life Products NZ, however, we have also tested the tea ourselves and found that one teaspoon with approximately 200ml of hot water, steeped for 3–5 minutes, produces a particularly pleasant balance of fresh herbal aroma, gentle sweetness and light spice.

For this reason, this is the method we recommend as an approachable starting point for our Japanese customers.

Brilliant Life Products NZ recommended brewing method

Tea: 1 teaspoon
Water: Approximately 200ml of hot water
Steeping time: 3–5 minutes

  1. Add one teaspoon of the blend to a teapot or tea infuser.
  2. Pour in approximately 200ml of hot water.
  3. Steep for 3–5 minutes.
  4. Remove or strain the botanicals and pour into your cup.

For your first cup, try tasting the tea after around three minutes.

If you would like a stronger herbal aroma, extend the steeping time toward four or five minutes.

Using slightly less water and a shorter steeping time than the manufacturer’s general guideline creates a light, refreshing cup while still allowing the aromas of the 14 botanicals to come through.

If you prefer a fuller herbal flavor, you can also use the manufacturer’s longer brewing time as a guide and adjust the infusion to your taste.

Loose leaf makes it easy to create your own cup

Because Manuka Flower Tea is a loose-leaf blend, you can adjust both the amount of tea and the steeping time.

Keep it lighter when you want something refreshing, or steep it a little longer when you want to experience more of the botanical aroma.

Being able to tailor each cup to your mood is one of the pleasures of loose-leaf herbal tea.

Enjoy It Hot, Iced or with Manuka Honey

Manuka Flower Tea can be enjoyed in different ways depending on the season and your mood.

Start with a hot cup to experience the blend as it is. In warmer weather, turn it into an iced tea. And when you want an especially New Zealand-inspired combination, try adding a little manuka honey.

Start with a hot cup and explore all 14 botanicals

For your first cup, try drinking it hot without adding anything.

You can experience the fresh aroma of manuka leaf, berry leaves, lemon balm and peppermint, followed by subtle fruitiness, natural sweetness and a gentle touch of spice.

As you drink, try noticing the different elements within the blend—the variety is part of what makes a 14-botanical tea so interesting.

Enjoy it iced in warmer weather

The refreshing herbal character of Manuka Flower Tea also works beautifully as an iced tea.

For iced tea, brew it slightly stronger than usual, allow it to cool and then chill it thoroughly in the refrigerator.

Pour it over ice and the lighter aromas of lemon balm and peppermint become especially refreshing.

How to enjoy it iced

1. Brew Manuka Flower Tea slightly stronger than usual
2. Remove or strain the botanicals and allow the tea to cool
3. Chill thoroughly in the refrigerator
4. Pour over ice and enjoy

It is a refreshing choice for warm-weather tea breaks or whenever you feel like a lighter cup.

Add manuka honey for a uniquely New Zealand cup

One particularly enjoyable variation is to add a small amount of manuka honey.

Manuka Flower Tea lets you enjoy the leaves of the manuka plant, while manuka honey comes from the nectar of its flowers.

Bringing the leaf and flower nectar together in one cup is a small but special way to experience two different sides of the same New Zealand plant.

Try the tea straight first, then add a little manuka honey at a time until you find the balance you enjoy.

The smooth sweetness of the honey gives the refreshing herbal blend a softer, rounder character.

A 60g bag makes approximately 30 cups as a general guide. The actual number will vary depending on how much you use, and the tea can be enjoyed hot, iced or with a little manuka honey depending on the season and your mood.
