What Is Sleepy Dream Time Tea?
Sleepy Dream Time Tea is a blended herbal tea created by New Zealand tea brand Tea Total.
Unlike traditional black tea, it is not based on Camellia sinensis tea leaves. Instead, it combines a variety of herbs and berry ingredients.
The blend includes St. John’s Wort, blackberry leaf and raspberry leaf together with blackberry, raspberry, strawberry and red currant.
This combination gives the tea a distinctive character, with a bright berry-like aroma and light, refreshing tartness.
Key features of Sleepy Dream Time Tea
• Herbal and berry blend
• Gentle, aromatic berry character
• Light tartness from hibiscus
• Caffeine-free
• Enjoyable hot or iced
• Approximately 30 cups per 50g, depending on the amount used
The name “Sleepy Dream Time” naturally brings evening tea time to mind.
Because it is caffeine-free, it can be a convenient choice after dinner or when you want a warm drink at the end of the day without reaching for coffee or regular tea.
Think of it as a fragrant alternative for your evening cup. That is where this blend fits most naturally.
What Does It Taste Like? Berry Aroma and a Hint of Hibiscus Tartness
One of the first questions people ask when choosing a herbal tea is, “What does it actually taste like?”
Sleepy Dream Time Tea contains several berry ingredients, including blackberry, raspberry, strawberry and red currant.
When you open the bag, the first impression is a bright berry-like aroma, balanced by the softer scent of the herbs.
Once hot water is added, the fragrance opens up further, while hibiscus adds a gentle tart note to the cup.
The tartness is not overly sharp. Instead, the blend offers a balanced combination of fruity aroma, herbal character and light acidity.
It is very different from the stronger body and tannic character of black tea, making it a pleasant option when you want a change from coffee or regular tea.
A herbal tea with an attractive color
As it brews, hibiscus and the berry ingredients give the tea a softly reddish color.
Using a clear teapot or glass cup lets you enjoy the changing color as well as the aroma and flavor.
Watching the leaves and fruit pieces gradually infuse into the water is also part of the enjoyment of loose-leaf herbal tea.
What Is in the Blend? Herbs and Fruits
Sleepy Dream Time Tea contains the following herbs and fruit ingredients:
Ingredients
• Blackberry leaf
• St. John’s Wort
• Raspberry leaf
• Hibiscus
• Flavouring
• Blackberry
• Raspberry fruit granules
• Strawberry pieces
• Red currant
The appeal of this blend comes from the way leaves, herbs and fruits are combined to create one layered aroma and flavor, rather than relying on a single dominant ingredient.
Blackberry leaf and raspberry leaf
Blackberries and raspberries are usually associated with their fruit, but this blend also uses their leaves.
The leaf ingredients add a more grounded herbal character, helping balance the sweeter berry-like aroma.
Hibiscus
Hibiscus is a common ingredient in herbal tea blends.
It is known for its vivid color and tart flavor, and in Sleepy Dream Time Tea it adds a light, refreshing accent to the berry notes.
Blackberry, raspberry, strawberry and red currant
The combination of several berry ingredients gives the tea its fruity character.
Rather than tasting only herbal or grassy, the berry aroma helps create a more fragrant and approachable cup.
What Is St. John’s Wort? Important Precautions
One ingredient in Sleepy Dream Time Tea that deserves particular attention is St. John’s Wort.
St. John’s Wort is a yellow-flowering plant also known botanically as Hypericum perforatum.
It has a long history of use as a herb and continues to be the subject of research.
However, research involving the plant itself or concentrated extracts should not automatically be interpreted as evidence of the effects of a commercially blended herbal tea.
Sleepy Dream Time Tea is intended to be enjoyed as a food and beverage product for its flavor and aroma.
St. John’s Wort and medicine interactions
St. John’s Wort has one particularly important safety consideration:
it may affect how certain medicines work.
Examples of medicines known to interact with St. John’s Wort include:
- Hormonal contraceptives, including oral contraceptive pills
- Some antidepressants
- Anticoagulants such as warfarin
- Some anti-seizure medicines
- Some migraine medicines
- Immunosuppressant medicines
- Some HIV medicines
- Other specific prescription medicines
This is not a complete list of all possible interactions.
Even though St. John’s Wort is a herb and this product is a tea, it is important not to assume that interactions with medicines are impossible.
Important St. John’s Wort precaution
If you are currently taking prescription or over-the-counter medicines, please consult your doctor or pharmacist before drinking this tea.
St. John’s Wort may affect the action of certain medicines, including hormonal contraceptives.
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, please consult an appropriate healthcare professional before use.
Understanding these precautions is an important part of choosing and enjoying herbal teas responsibly.
Caffeine-Free for Evening Tea Time
Sleepy Dream Time Tea is caffeine-free.
Coffee, traditional black tea and green tea naturally contain caffeine, and some people prefer to reduce their caffeine intake later in the day.
A caffeine-free herbal tea can therefore offer another option for after dinner or for a warm drink at the end of the day.
It can work well:
- After dinner when you want something warm
- When you prefer to avoid coffee or regular tea in the evening
- While reading or watching a movie
- After a bath or shower
- When you simply want to slow down and enjoy a fragrant cup
Enjoying a warm, aromatic drink while keeping your evening caffeine intake low is a simple way to make this blend part of your tea routine.
Try replacing your evening coffee with herbal tea
If you regularly drink coffee, you do not need to give it up completely.
You might enjoy your favorite coffee in the morning or afternoon, then switch to a caffeine-free herbal tea in the evening.
Choosing different drinks at different times of day lets you enjoy the character of both coffee and herbal tea.
How to Brew Sleepy Dream Time Tea
The amount of blend, water temperature and steeping time can all affect the aroma and flavor of herbal tea.
Manufacturer guidance for fruit and herbal teas suggests using a heaped teaspoon with approximately 250ml of hot water and steeping for around 6–10 minutes.
At Brilliant Life Products NZ, however, we have also tested the blend ourselves and found that one teaspoon with approximately 200ml of hot water, steeped for 3–5 minutes, produces a pleasantly balanced cup with a clear berry aroma and gentle hibiscus tartness.
For this reason, this is the method we recommend as an easy starting point for our customers in Japan.
Brilliant Life Products NZ recommended brewing method
Blend: 1 teaspoon
Water: Approximately 200ml of hot water
Steeping time: 3–5 minutes
- Add one teaspoon of the blend to a teapot or tea infuser.
- Pour in approximately 200ml of hot water.
- Steep for 3–5 minutes.
- Remove or strain the blend and enjoy.
Try tasting the tea after around three minutes. If you prefer a fuller flavor, simply extend the steeping time to suit your taste.
This method uses a shorter infusion time than the manufacturer guideline and produces a lighter, easy-drinking cup that still highlights the berry aroma.
Try it straight first
For your first cup, we recommend drinking it without adding anything.
This allows you to experience the natural balance between the berry aroma and the light tartness of hibiscus.
Add a little honey if you prefer
If you enjoy a softer, slightly sweeter taste, you can add a small amount of honey.
Try the tea straight first, then add honey gradually so the sweetness does not overpower the blend.
Enjoy it iced in warmer weather
The berry and hibiscus character also works well as an iced herbal tea.
For iced tea, brew it slightly stronger, allow it to cool, then chill it thoroughly in the refrigerator.
Serve over ice for a refreshing alternative to the hot version.
