Honey exported and labelled as mānuka honey must be tested by recognised laboratories using four chemical markers and one DNA marker — five characteristics in total.

Fun fact: kiwifruit became a global brand in New Zealand
Today, kiwifruit is strongly associated with New Zealand.
Its origins, however, are in China.
Seeds were brought to New Zealand from China in 1904, and cultivation and breeding developed locally over the following decades.
In the 1920s, the Hayward variety, which became the basis of today’s familiar green kiwifruit, was selected.
So why is it called “kiwifruit”?
The fruit was originally known as Chinese gooseberry.
As exports from New Zealand expanded in the 1950s, a more distinctly New Zealand name was chosen, and “kiwifruit” was adopted in 1959.
The “Kiwi” in that name refers to New Zealand’s native flightless kiwi bird.
The kiwi is one of the country’s most recognisable national symbols.
And one of its most distinctive features is simple: it is a bird that cannot fly.
You might hear “flightless bird” and imagine that perhaps it can manage a very short flight. It really cannot fly.
For a very long time, New Zealand had almost no native land mammals that preyed on birds. As a result, kiwi and several other native birds evolved in an environment where escaping into the air was far less important.
Later, however, dogs and rats arrived with people, followed by introduced predators such as stoats, ferrets and cats. Ground-dwelling kiwi were particularly vulnerable to these new threats.
Kiwi chicks are especially vulnerable to stoats, while dogs are a major threat to adult kiwi.
Today, New Zealand continues extensive conservation work, including predator control, protected areas and dedicated kiwi recovery programmes.

Looking at actual menus in New Zealand, ramen around NZ$20–27, udon around NZ$18–26, and rice bowls in the NZ$20 range are easy to find.

A NZ$25 bowl of ramen is roughly ¥2,225.
In Japan, that would usually be closer to a premium or highly specialised bowl of ramen, while in New Zealand it is far from unusual.
For Japanese travellers accustomed to everyday lunch prices at home, seeing udon or a rice bowl costing well over ¥1,500 or ¥2,000 can be a memorable surprise.
Does the higher price mean a much bigger portion? McDonald’s gives an interesting comparison
There is a common idea that overseas meals may cost more, but the portions must also be much larger.
McDonald’s provides an interesting comparison because similar products are sold in both Japan and New Zealand.

Looking at New Zealand in a global context gives another useful perspective.
