Hyaluronic acid is widely known as a skincare ingredient, but it is not a substance that exists only for cosmetics.
It is a naturally occurring high-molecular-weight polysaccharide found throughout the human body, including the skin, synovial fluid in the joints and the vitreous body of the eye.
“Hyaluronic acid” is also not always one identical ingredient. Its properties can vary depending on molecular weight and processing, and cosmetic ingredient lists may include names such as sodium hyaluronate, sodium acetylated hyaluronate and hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid.
In foods and supplements, you may see labels such as “hyaluronic acid 60 mg”, while aesthetic medicine uses injectable hyaluronic acid, and medical practice may use hyaluronic acid preparations administered directly into joints.
Although all of these use the name “hyaluronic acid”, their route of use, purpose and product category are very different.

What is hyaluronic acid? A high-molecular-weight polysaccharide found in the body
Hyaluronic acid is known as Hyaluronic Acid or Hyaluronan.
Chemically, it is a long-chain polysaccharide made from repeating units of two sugars: D-glucuronic acid and N-acetylglucosamine.
More specifically, hyaluronic acid belongs to a group of molecules known as glycosaminoglycans, or GAGs.
In the body, it is one component of the extracellular matrix surrounding cells, and it contributes to the structure, hydration environment and viscoelastic properties of tissues.
Did you know? “Acid” does not mean it is sour
Because the name contains the word “acid”, hyaluronic acid can sound a little like citric acid or acetic acid.
However, it is completely different from the acids responsible for sour flavours in foods.
Hyaluronic acid is a very large polysaccharide molecule, so it is better not to judge its properties simply from the word “acid” in its name.
Where is hyaluronic acid found in the body?
Hyaluronic acid is not found only in the skin.
Important locations include:
- skin
- synovial fluid in the joints
- cartilage and tissues around joints
- the vitreous body of the eye
- connective tissues
This is why hyaluronic acid is studied and used in fields ranging from cosmetics and food science to ophthalmology, orthopaedics and aesthetic medicine.
Hyaluronic acid in the skin
In the skin, hyaluronic acid is one component of the extracellular matrix.
Because it interacts readily with water molecules, it contributes to the hydration environment and physical properties of skin tissue.
Hyaluronic acid in synovial fluid
Hyaluronic acid is also present in synovial fluid, the fluid found inside joints.
Its viscosity and elasticity contribute to the characteristic physical properties of synovial fluid.
Hyaluronic acid in the eye
Hyaluronic acid is present in the vitreous body inside the eye.
In fact, the history of hyaluronic acid research is closely connected with the eye.
Why does hyaluronic acid interact so strongly with water?
One reason hyaluronic acid is so widely used in skincare is its strong interaction with water.
Its long molecular chain contains many sites capable of interacting with water molecules.
When hydrated, hyaluronic acid can form structures with distinctive viscosity and elasticity.
You may sometimes see claims such as:
“1 gram of hyaluronic acid can hold several litres of water.”
However, the hydration behaviour of hyaluronic acid varies depending on molecular weight, concentration, salt concentration and the surrounding environment.
Rather than treating one number as an absolute rule, it is more accurate to understand hyaluronic acid as a large molecule that interacts strongly with water.
Did you know? Hyaluronic acid was first isolated from the eye
Research on hyaluronic acid began in the 1930s, when it was isolated from the vitreous body of bovine eyes.
The name “hyaluronic” is also connected with the term used for the vitreous body.
Today, hyaluronic acid is strongly associated with skincare, but it was not originally discovered as a cosmetic ingredient.
Researchers later identified it in the skin, synovial fluid, cartilage and other tissues, and it is now studied across a wide range of scientific and medical fields.
Does hyaluronic acid decrease with age? Skin changes involve more than quantity alone
When reading about hyaluronic acid, you will often see statements saying that it “decreases with age”.
Age-related changes in skin hyaluronic acid are indeed well documented.
However, it is more accurate to say that the amount, distribution, molecular size and interactions of hyaluronic acid with surrounding tissues may change differently across layers of the skin, rather than imagining that total hyaluronic acid simply declines everywhere at the same rate.
Studies of ageing skin have reported major changes in epidermal hyaluronic acid, while changes in the dermis may also involve the way hyaluronic acid is associated with surrounding tissue rather than only a simple reduction in total quantity.
External factors such as ultraviolet exposure are also studied in relation to the extracellular matrix and hyaluronic acid metabolism in the skin.
For that reason, the idea that:
“hyaluronic acid declines with age, so simply applying or swallowing hyaluronic acid restores it”
is too simplistic.
It is more useful to understand ageing as a process that changes the broader environment in which hyaluronic acid exists within the skin.
High- vs low-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid
One of the most important concepts when discussing hyaluronic acid is molecular weight.
Even when two ingredients are both called “hyaluronic acid”, the length of the molecular chain can be very different.
Common descriptions include:
- high-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid
- medium-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid
- low-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid
- hyaluronic acid oligomers
However, there is no single universally applied cut-off defining exactly what molecular weight must be considered “low” or “high”. Definitions can vary between studies and manufacturers.
High-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid
High-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid has a longer molecular chain and a larger molecular size.
In cosmetics, it is commonly used for its ability to interact with and retain water at the skin surface.
Because the molecule is relatively large, its cosmetic role is generally centred around the skin surface and stratum corneum.
Low-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid
Low-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid is produced by reducing the length of the hyaluronic acid chain.
Studies using human skin have reported that distribution within the stratum corneum and movement into the skin can differ according to molecular weight.
However, this does not mean:
“low molecular weight means it reaches the dermis.”
For cosmetic use, it is more appropriate to think in terms of differences in behaviour within the stratum corneum and moisturising characteristics.
Molecular weight changes more than just size
Research shows that molecular weight can influence characteristics such as:
- viscosity
- hydration behaviour
- distribution within tissues
- interactions with receptors
In other words, not every material labelled “hyaluronic acid” behaves in exactly the same way.
What does hyaluronic acid do in cosmetics?
In cosmetics, hyaluronic acid is primarily used as a moisturising and skin-conditioning ingredient.
It can help create an environment that retains moisture at the skin surface and within the stratum corneum, helping the skin feel moisturised, smooth and comfortable.
An important point is:
hyaluronic acid applied in a cosmetic should not be thought of as directly replacing the hyaluronic acid that naturally exists deeper within the skin.
Its cosmetic role is mainly considered in relation to moisturising and conditioning the skin surface and stratum corneum.
Does low-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid always penetrate deeply?
The distribution of hyaluronic acid in the skin depends not only on molecular weight, but also on concentration, formulation, delivery system and interactions with other ingredients.
Research has shown differences in skin distribution depending on molecular size, but this should not be converted into a product claim such as:
“low molecular weight means the cosmetic reaches the dermis.”
When comparing cosmetics, it is better to consider molecular weight together with the overall formulation and how the product feels on your skin.
What are sodium hyaluronate, sodium acetylated hyaluronate and hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid?
Cosmetic ingredient lists may contain several hyaluronic-acid-related names, including:
- sodium hyaluronate
- sodium acetylated hyaluronate
- hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid
- hydrolyzed sodium hyaluronate
What is sodium hyaluronate?
Sodium hyaluronate is the sodium salt of hyaluronic acid.
It is widely used in cosmetics as a moisturising and skin-conditioning ingredient.
Hyaluronic acid and sodium hyaluronate are therefore closely related rather than completely unrelated ingredients.
What is sodium acetylated hyaluronate?
Sodium acetylated hyaluronate is a hyaluronic-acid-related cosmetic ingredient produced by chemically modifying sodium hyaluronate.
It is used in cosmetic formulations for moisturising and skin-conditioning purposes.
Some products combine sodium hyaluronate and sodium acetylated hyaluronate in the same formula.
What is hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid?
Hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid is produced by breaking longer hyaluronic acid chains into smaller fragments through hydrolysis.
Its molecular size and behaviour within a formulation therefore differ from those of larger hyaluronic acid molecules.
One important point is that having more types of hyaluronic-acid-related ingredients does not automatically make one cosmetic better than another.
The overall formulation, texture and how well the product suits your skin are just as important as the ingredient names.
Hyaluronic acid vs collagen: what is the difference?
Hyaluronic acid and collagen are frequently mentioned together in skincare and beauty products, but they are very different substances.
Hyaluronic acid is a polysaccharide belonging to the glycosaminoglycan family. It interacts readily with water and is found in the extracellular matrix, synovial fluid and other tissues.
Collagen, on the other hand, is a protein that forms part of the structure of skin, bone, tendons and many other tissues.

Both are associated with the skin, but hyaluronic acid and collagen are not the same substance, and one is not simply a substitute for the other.

What happens when hyaluronic acid is taken orally?
Hyaluronic acid is used not only in cosmetics but also in foods and dietary supplements.
This naturally raises the question:
“If I swallow hyaluronic acid, does it go straight to my skin?”
Orally consumed hyaluronic acid follows a completely different route from hyaluronic acid applied to the skin.
It passes through the gastrointestinal tract and is subject to digestion, breakdown and interactions within the intestinal environment.
Therefore, oral hyaluronic acid should not be imagined as travelling intact to the skin and being inserted directly into skin tissue.
At the same time, researchers have conducted human trials to investigate what happens when specific forms and amounts of hyaluronic acid are consumed orally.
A better way to think about the subject is:
not “oral hyaluronic acid becomes skin”, but “researchers are studying what changes may be observed under specific oral-intake conditions.”
Research on oral hyaluronic acid and skin
Human research on oral hyaluronic acid has increased in recent years.
A meta-analysis published in 2025 evaluated seven randomised controlled trials (RCTs) involving oral hyaluronic acid.
Outcomes examined included:
- skin hydration
- elasticity
- skin firmness
- wrinkle depth
- wrinkle volume
- transepidermal water loss
Across the pooled analysis, statistically significant differences were reported for skin hydration, elasticity and wrinkle depth.
However, not every outcome showed a statistically significant difference. Clear differences were not found for some measures including skin firmness, wrinkle volume and transepidermal water loss.
A research result is not the same as a claim for every commercial product
This distinction is important.
The studies used specific hyaluronic acid materials, doses, durations and participant groups.
Therefore,
the findings do not mean that every commercial food or supplement containing hyaluronic acid will produce the same result.
The number of studies, participant numbers, source materials and doses also varied.
The findings are scientifically interesting, but research results should be kept separate from claims about individual commercial products.
Hyaluronic acid and joints
Hyaluronic acid is naturally present in synovial fluid.
Synovial fluid has distinctive viscous and elastic properties, and hyaluronic acid contributes to these physical characteristics.
For this reason, medical hyaluronic acid preparations may be administered directly into joints in some clinical settings.
However, oral hyaluronic acid used as a food or supplement is completely different from an intra-articular medical treatment.
Oral hyaluronic acid and joint-related research
A systematic review published in 2024 examined studies of oral hyaluronic acid in people with osteoarthritis and low back pain.
The review included 11 studies with a total of 597 participants, oral doses ranging from 30 to 300 mg per day, and intervention periods ranging from four weeks to 12 months.
Several studies assessed outcomes such as pain and joint function.
However, these studies mainly involved people with diagnosed medical conditions. They do not establish that ordinary foods or commercial supplements treat or improve disease.
Medical treatment for joint conditions and everyday use of foods or supplements should be considered separately.
Topical, oral and injectable hyaluronic acid are not the same
Because the same name is used in several different settings, it is easy to assume that all hyaluronic acid products work in the same way.
They do not.

The words “contains hyaluronic acid” therefore do not mean that all of these products should be treated as equivalent.
Where does hyaluronic acid come from?
Historically, hyaluronic acid was extracted from animal tissues.
One well-known traditional source is the rooster comb.
Today, hyaluronic acid can also be produced widely through microbial fermentation.
Depending on the manufacturer, product information may therefore identify hyaluronic acid as:
- animal-derived
- fermentation-derived
If the origin of the ingredient matters to you, check the ingredient list and manufacturer information.
How to choose hyaluronic acid cosmetics
1. Do not choose based only on the words “contains hyaluronic acid”
Cosmetics may contain sodium hyaluronate, sodium acetylated hyaluronate, hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid and other related ingredients.
Looking at the specific form can help you understand how the product has been formulated.
2. Do not judge quality from molecular weight alone
Molecular weight can influence how hyaluronic acid behaves at the skin surface and within the stratum corneum.
However, “lower molecular weight is always better” or “a combination of high and low molecular weights is automatically superior” are overly simple conclusions.
3. Check the other moisturising and conditioning ingredients
Cosmetics are rarely formulated with hyaluronic acid alone.
Ingredients such as glycerin, botanical extracts, plant oils, shea butter and ceramides may also influence the overall moisturising, conditioning and emollient feel of a product.
4. Consider the complete formulation and how practical it is to use
Hyaluronic acid appears in serums, gels, creams, eye creams, facial masks and many other product types.
Ingredient names matter, but so does whether the texture and product format fit comfortably into your skincare routine.
How to choose an oral hyaluronic acid supplement
1. Check the amount per daily serving
Labels may show the amount per capsule, sachet or daily serving.
For meaningful comparison, check how much hyaluronic acid is provided in the recommended daily amount.
2. Do not confuse research doses with product effectiveness
If a study used 100 mg or 200 mg of hyaluronic acid, that does not mean another product containing the same numerical amount will necessarily produce the same result.
The source material, molecular weight, manufacturing method, participant group and study duration may all differ.
3. Check the rest of the formula
Hyaluronic acid supplements may be formulated alone or combined with ingredients such as collagen, vitamin C or probiotics.
There is no universal rule that a single-ingredient formula or a multi-ingredient formula is automatically better.
Check the complete ingredient profile and whether any ingredients overlap with other supplements you already use.
4. Do not choose based only on the largest number
Supplement labels often highlight large ingredient amounts.
However, a higher number does not automatically mean a better product.
Consider the amount, ingredient source, daily serving, other ingredients and how practical the product is for regular use.

Cosmetic example 2: Placenta Eye Cream
Placenta Eye Cream 15g also contains hyaluronic acid.
Unlike a sheet mask, this is a cream designed for use around the eye area.
Its formulation also includes ingredients such as glycerin, shea butter, jojoba oil, kiwi seed oil and vitamin E.
Here again, hyaluronic acid forms part of a cosmetic formulation designed to moisturise, help protect against dryness and leave the skin feeling smooth.
Even when two cosmetics both contain hyaluronic acid, a facial mask and an eye cream can differ considerably in product format, accompanying ingredients and how they are used.
Food and supplement example: Health Life Probiotics
Hyaluronic acid is also used in some foods and dietary supplements.

However, the hyaluronic acid materials and products used in the oral studies discussed earlier are different from this commercial product.

The words “contains hyaluronic acid” do not tell you everything
- Facial masks: check which hyaluronic-acid-related ingredients are used and what other moisturising or conditioning ingredients are included

- Foods and supplements: check the amount of hyaluronic acid per serving or per day, as well as the other ingredients
In other words, do not look only at whether a product contains hyaluronic acid; also consider what form it takes and how it is being used in that particular product.

Hyaluronic acid and sodium hyaluronate are widely used in cosmetic formulations.
However, no cosmetic is suitable for every person.
If you experience redness, swelling, itching, irritation or another unwanted reaction, stop using the product and seek appropriate professional advice if necessary.
For foods and supplements
Oral hyaluronic acid has been investigated in human research, but commercial products differ in source materials, formulations and amounts.
Follow the manufacturer's recommended serving and check for ingredient overlap if you use several supplements.
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a medical condition, take medication or have relevant food allergies, speak with a doctor, pharmacist or other qualified healthcare professional before using a new supplement.
Medical hyaluronic acid should not be compared directly with cosmetics or supplements
Hyaluronic acid injections used in aesthetic medicine and intra-articular hyaluronic acid used in medical care are medical procedures.
Their purpose, administration and safety considerations differ from those of over-the-counter cosmetics and foods.
Decisions about injectable or medically administered hyaluronic acid should be made with an appropriately qualified healthcare professional.

When choosing foods or supplements, check the amount per daily serving, ingredient source and other components in the formula.
Most importantly, do not treat cosmetics, foods, aesthetic injections and intra-articular medical treatments as interchangeable simply because they all contain something called hyaluronic acid.
